NEW YORK CITY, NY, UNITED STATES, September 18, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Scientists at the Tisch Multiple Sclerosis Research Center of New York (MSRCNY) have identified new biomarkers in multiple sclerosis that may help physicians track the response to stem cell treatment in people with progressive multiple sclerosis, according to a study published today in the journal STEM CELLS Translational Medicine.
Biomarkers are measurable biological indicators, typically found in blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), that reflect changes in disease progression or treatment response. They are valuable diagnostic and treatment tools thanks to their ability to reflect a biological response in a disease before a patient experiences noticeable changes in symptoms.
In this study, researchers analyzed CSF from two groups of individuals with MS before and after treatment with mesenchymal stem cell–derived neural progenitor cells (MSC-NPs). These cells, derived from a patient’s own bone marrow and administered into the CSF, are designed to reduce harmful immune activity and protect nervous system cells.
The researchers identified four biomarkers for MS following treatment:
CCL2 decreased, indicating reduced inflammatory signaling
SCF decreased, reflecting shifts in immune and support cell behavior
MMP9 increased, tied to potential repair processes
CHIT1 increased, linked to potential repair processes
